Abstract:

The arctic offshore environment poses challenges in design, site construction, and operation that range from the problems associated with large ice forces, to those of short open-water drilling and construction seasons. An overview of probabilistic analysis applications in arctic offshore engineering are presented. The example applications selected for discussion illustrate innovative approaches and encompass many important engineering considerations. The three classes of problems used as examples in this paper are: calculation of ice forces on a structure, selection from a number of options, of an optimum configuration or structure type, using decision analysis, and the evaluation of a summer drilling or on-site construction system.
