Abstract:

Arctic marine site investigations have evolved from the need by oil companies to operate in offshore areas beyond the ice shear zone. An overview of the site investigation organization methodology and planning is presented and comparisons are made with practice in other regions. The use of several marine site investigation techniques is discussed, and typical costs for these investigations are compared. Recommendations encourage the use of marine investigations that emphasize the collection of high quality geotechnical data on a multi-disciplinary basis that recognizes the unique restraints on working in the Arctic region.
