Abstract:
Restoration of the Statue of Liberty is as much an exercise in cooperative management as it is in technical design and execution. Among those sharing management responsibility are: the French-American Committee for Restoration of the Statue of Liberty, Inc.; the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Commission, whose working arm is the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc.; and the National Park Service. All have retained architectural and engineering firms. The construction management firm oversees about 50 contractors. The latest technical decision is to strengthen the existing framework of the upraised arm rather than replace it with a design similar to Gustave Eiffel's original intent. The all-aluminum scaffolding design is described.
