Abstract:

These proceedings consist of seven papers dealing with the topic of the design of complex structures using limit state methods. The emphasis is on the role of plastic or limit load techniques. However, the topics of reliability and probability as they relate to the subject of limit state design methods are also addressed. Each author considers the primary theme from a different perspective ranging from a historical review of the role of plasticity in steel design to a discussion of an optimization technique which uses sensitivity analysis to increase the rate of convergence. In just about all cases the concept of load resistant factor design (LRFD) is discussed with particular emphasis on the proposed AISC specification.
