Abstract:

Cavitation in turbulent shear flow depends on the intensity and spectral characteristics of the pressure fluctuations in a Lagrangian frame of reference as well as depending on the concentration of dissolved gas and the number density and size of free nuclei. Both vaporous and gaseous cavitation are possible, vaporous cavitation being more likely at lower concentrations of dissolved gas and small turbulent time scales. A theoretical model of cavitation inception suggests that, for engineering purposes, a universal prediction scheme is possible, but will require further development.
