Abstract:

Recent attention has been given to retrofitting electrical generation facilities at existing dams. Maintaining a safe structure during construction, and accomplishing this within a budget presents the design team with numerous challenges. The project described demonstrates the importance of critical geologic features on performance and the value of instrumentation in alerting of unsafe conditions developing during the construction phase. Also, the value of accurate as-built documents of hydroelectric structures, in connection with future additions or modifications, is apparent.
