Part of: Analysis and Design of Pile Foundations

Abstract:

This paper reviews current pile cap design practices and presents results of tests on two pile caps with different reinforcement locations. Lateral load tests performed on two pile cap designs with 12 in. (305 mm. ) pile embedments indicated that for a given lateral load, the lateral deflections and rotations of the cap with steel reinforcement 15 in. (381 mm. ) above its base were approximately twice those of the other cap with steel reinforcement 3 in. (76 mm. ) above its base. The reverse was true for bending stresses in the piles at the bases of the caps.
