Abstract:

The effect of flat dilatometer penetration on the lateral stress conditions in soil around the dilatometer blade and the soil response against dilatometer diaphragm deflection were investigated in a laboratory study. A specially constructed aluminum block containing a dilatometer diaphragm and a strain gage equipped leaf cantilever to record lateral movement of the diaphragm was used. The sensor made it possible to obtain non-linear lateral pressure-deflection behavior.
