Abstract:

Data collectors play an increasingly important role in surveying. The data collector serves as an interface between the total station and the computer and as an electronic assistant to the field crew. Features of data collectors include: 1) Ability to input alphanumeric data from keyboard or the total electronic station; 2) configurable RS-232-C transmission; 3) ability to store data from a computer; 4) ability to compute bearing and distance or other surveying information; and 5) ability to be used with new software. Information is provided to help the engineer evaluate cost, maintenance and capabilities of a data collector.
