Abstract:

The two objectives established for these proceedings are: (1) to summarize the principles and procedures of probabilistic characterization of soil properties in a readily understood manner rather than a highly theoretical treatment; and (2) to present examples of the applications of probabilistic characterization in the form of case studies. State-of-the-art reviews cover the need, principles, and application of the methods of probabilistic characterization of soil properties. Case studies include statistical characteristics of Indiana soil properties, coefficient of variation in in situ test results in sands, probabilistic characterization of Nigerian soils, stochastic theory of strength of cohesive soil, and landform-based probabilistic characterization of site soil properties.
