Abstract:

The use of pure oxygen in biological wastewater treatment is the only major advance which has occurred in the area of activated sludge treatment since the early 1960's. Furthermore, within the past ten years oxygen activated sludge has become a viable alternative in those situations where the choice of activated sludge for secondary treatment is considered to be cost-effective. Commercially available oxygen activated sludge processes are proprietary systems which are sized for each individual situation by the vendor. Such action makes it extremely difficult to develop a general design procedure for these types of systems. This report is directed toward a review of the activated sludge process. Areas covered include: (1) Oxygen transfer in the activated sludge process; (2) development of the pure oxygen activated sludge process; (3) operating characteristics of the activated sludge process; and (4) design considerations for oxygen activated sludge systems.
