Abstract:

Thirty-one papers and six invited lectures presented at the specialty conference on engineering and construction in tropical and residual soils are included. The proceedings represent a world-wide cross section of soil problems. Geotechnical properties are discussed, including swell and creep properties of an African black clay, properties of laterite gravels, geologic classification of coralline deposits, and composition effect on suction of a residual soil. A section on soils investigation and field testing includes discussions of air foam sampling, full scale load testing, and design of drilled shafts in South Florida limestone. Landslides, slope failures in colluvium overlying weak residual soils, stability analysis of unsaturated soil slopes, and engineering problems of gravel deposits are considered in a section on slope stability. Four papers also cover aspects of excavation and dewatering. Six construction case histories are presented including the use of ground anchors, effects of tropical soils on airport design, dam construction problems in a tropical environment, and repair of an old earth dam using filter fabric. Many of the papers are illustrated with charts, graphs, photographs, and tables.
