Abstract:

In the October, 1980, issue, Civil Engineering�ASCE announced an essay contest on the following questions: How can the civil engineering profession be improved? How can civil engineering works be planned, designed, constructed, operated or maintained more efficiently? Last month the three prizewinners were published, and this month three more of the best essays are presented. Jerry A. Nathanson writes on the need for civil engineers to maintain an eye on creativity while they focus on productivity. S. V. Nathan writes on the need for some major reforms in earth engineering practice, and Scott S. Pickard addresses the importance of confidence in personal performance and productivity.
