Abstract:

A radial flow consolidation cell that can be used with commercially available loading frames was developed and a series of tests were performed on samples of sedimented kaolin. Simple curve fitting methods are discussed for the calculation of the radial coefficient of consolidation for both radially inwards and outwards drainage using either free or equal strain theory. Test results indicated that consolidation is retarded due to a smear zone when rigid drains are used and that the free strain theory works better in reducing the data.
