Abstract:

Fifty-two papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Expansive Soils are included; conference panel and open discussions are summarized. Engineers often predict anticipated soil volume change and select design parameters on the basis of minimal test data, rather than sound engineering design. The conference aimed to promote standard characterization procedures for expansive soils. Papers are divided into six areas: 1) Concepts in testing and analysis procedures, 2) influence of ambient environment on soil behavior, 3) treatment to minimize damage by volume change, 4) special design and construction procedures for structural foundations, 5) innovative concepts for soil characterization and treatment, and 6) technology transfer to enhance public awareness. Expansive soil, clay and rock are considered in Australia, Canada, Greece, Israel Peru, Spain, the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. The conference was sponsored by the ASCE Expansive Soils Research Council. Extensive graphs, charts, figures, equations and photographs accompany most papers.
