Abstract:

Here are some highlights of the state of Research Needs in Structural Engineering, prepared at National Science Foundation�ASCE workshop in June 1979. Overall, the statement says, U.S. structural research is less well funded and focussed on key needs than in Europe. Among needs identified: For damaged structures, information to help in repair or replace decisions. Life cycle costing. Providing safety through structural redundancy. Improved verification of computer programs. Research on structures for unusual environments such as underground, in water and in space. Safety of community lifeline structures. Structural retrofit and repair�which old building structures are safe and which not? Analysis for fracture and fatigue�we need a bridge between fracture mechanics and structural engineering. Computer programs for finite element analysis. Structural safety during construction. Constructability of structures. Learning from structural failures.
