Abstract: Wheel flat (referred to the common name of wheel tread scratch and detachment) is one of the most common forms of locomotive damages. When flats occur on wheels’ tread, the wheels can not maintain the perfect circular shape. When Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu 610031, China. Wheels scroll to the flats on the top surface of rails, it will generate a great cyclical impact, the impact frequency p=V/(2πR) (V is speed; R is the wheel rolling radius). It not only produces the vehicle vibration and influences the strength of vehicle spares, worsening the damage of wheels, but also affects the structural parts of track seriously, resulting in accidental damages to wheel track. The wheel flats can lead to a shock and vibration on wheel-rail system, resulting in severe harms to the wheels, especially the structural components of track. Based on the formula of low-joint impact force and flats impact velocity, a simplified formula for calculating impact has been introduced to analyze the influence of flats on tracks.
