Washington DC is a dynamic, fast growing capital city in the US. It is the seat of the national government. It has been attracting new residents and businesses as a result of the positive development strategies of DC Government. This paper explores the opportunities that exist to incorporate the various new ITS technologies that will provide traveler information into the comprehensive master plan that has been prepared for the city. The comprehensive highway and transit plans can be used as test beds for demonstrating emerging ITS technologies. For this purpose a segment of the city such as the southeast/Anacostia area is proposed. The basic concept involves the assumption of added connection of ferry transportation connecting Northern Virginia and Maryland terminals with Anacostia region and providing connection to various DC attraction and business centers. The ITS technology elements include a personal rapid transit systems (monorail), and other internet based traveler information systems, e-parking technologies and infrastructure to vehicle communication technologies. The implementation of such technologies in collaboration with Federal and neighboring states will enhance the technological advancements, attraction of developments and tax base to Washington DC. |
