Abstract: Assuming quasi-steady flow, the characteristic velocity of stream bed movement and the relation between the depth of the moving gravel layer and the water depth are derived for both diffusion wave and kinematic wave approximations. The characteristic velocity relation is verified using field data and is compared with the relation derived by Weir in 1983.
