In this study of the spatial variability of soil parameters, the variation with depth in sixty-seven cone penetrometer test (CPT) soundings from all five National Geotechnical Experimentation Sites (NGES) are statistically analyzed. The aim is to determine the best (global) correlation model to use for characterizing the spatial variability of tip resistance, qc. Analyses based on correlation functions, variograms, variance functions, wavelets, and periodograms of the CPT readings all indicate that qc exhibits fractal behavior in the vertical direction. Also, a tractable band-limited fractal model is offered to characterize and simulate typical CPT data. |
