Abstract:

The paper presents solutions to increasing the transfer capacity (book rating) of two critical 345kV tie lines. Described are computer modeling techniques using laser survey data coupled with finite element tower and conductor analysis. Rising the conductor elevation through re-tensioning and by employing unique methods to increase the height of the insulator points of support are discussed. Topics address include assessment of tower performance using original design holds under current ASCE code checks; evaluation of marginal capacity and tower upgrades techniques for new loading conditions; limitations of suspension towers modified with suspended deadend configurations; and conductor system as-built modeling and its response to removal of creep generated sag. Methods discussed will demonstrate powerful opportunities to increase the value of the transmission asset.
