Abstract:

An arched footbridge under construction in Seoul, South Korea, that is reconnecting the metropolis with a tranquil island, will demonstrate the compressive strength and sleek design potential of a new ultra-high-performance concrete. Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC), which debuted in the mid-1990s as the first concrete with a compressive strength approaching that of steel, is now being used as a foundation to launch a new form of ultra-high-performance concrete, called Ductal. Given its maximum compressive strength of 230 MPa, and its maximum bending tensile strength of 50 MPa, some of the engineers closely involved in Ductal's development are hesitant to call it concrete at all.
