Abstract:

The design and construction of a sanitary sewer siphon using high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe in San Juan, Puerto Rico, provided Black & Veatch with a challenging opportunity to conduct a value engineering (VE) study on sanitary sewer siphon pipe options and construction methodologies. The company's recommendation to use HDPE pipe and to construct the Rio Puerto Nuevo river crossing in the wet resulted in significant cost savings. The design of the pipe included the development of horizontal and vertical alignments, pipe hydraulics, the selection of the pipe wall thickness, and a pile clearance analysis. The HDPE pipe is joined using heat fusion, launched into the river, and covered. Construction of the project is still ongoing.
