Abstract:

For owners of small firms, deciding to sell the business they've founded or owned can be gut-wrenching. But some owners find it's a good way to transfer ownership and keep their creation in tact, or to give the firm a needed shot in the arm. Most say finding a good fit with a buyer is hard work, although business consultants can help. Buyers often offer access to corporate-level functions such as human resources, information technology, accounting, training, or marketing. Owners might fear rebellion by employees, but being honest with the staff about the changes to come can soften the blow.
