Abstract:

This proceedings, Coastal Sediments '99, contains over 181 papers delivered at the 4th International Symposium on Coastal Engineering and Science of Coastal Sediment Processes held on June 21-23, 1999, on Long Island, New York. This technical specialty conference was devoted to the physical aspects of the sediment processes in the coastal and inlet environments. The Conference theme was Scales of the Coastal Sediment Motion and Geomorphic Change. Papers were presented in four parallel sessions under the general areas of 1) fundamentals, 2) processes and systems, 3) responses and macroscale, and 4) applications. Session topics covered a wide range and included sediment budgets, longshore transport, cross-shore transport, bars, inlet morphology, inlet engineering, spits, beach fill, depth of closure, shore protection, navigation channels, dredged material fate, sheet flow, suspended sediments, swash processes, and cliff processes. These and related subjects are examined in peer-reviewed papers describing basic approaches, field data collection, mathematical and physical models, instrumentation, case studies, engineering approaches, and application of general methodologies.
