Abstract:

Because testing new processes, treatment chemicals, and operational modifications is difficult in full-scale water treatment facilities, many utilities are installing permanent pilot plants. These facilities are fully-functional, scaled-down water treatment plants that can include all of the processes used in a full-scale facility, as well as specialized and sometimes experimental processes. Permanent pilot plants offer a safe, reliable, low-cost way to test various treatment techniques without compromising the quality of water delivered to customers.
