Abstract:

When completed, the 54-kilometer Bang Na-Bang Pli-Bang Pakong Expressway in Bangkok, Thailand, will be the longest elevated expressway in the world. The precast segmental method is being used to construct this box girder viaduct. The extreme width of the expressway (27 meters) and the narrow right-of-way (5 meters) created many challenges that were overcome during the design process. The result is an elegant structure in which the columns seem to lift the slender box girder from the ground. The structural shapes, while being light and open, also reflect the design requirements of the project and the construction method.
