Abstract:

The $2.9 billion Bangkok subway project faces several daunting obstacles�soft soils, a high water table and Thailand's current economic upheaval. The Blue Line subway system for the Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority (CMRTA) will have 22 km of twin-tunnels and will serve as the downtown backbone to a much larger metropolitan transportation system being designed and constructed in the Thai capital. The CMRTA subway project is divided into northern and southern sections. The northern section was originally planned as an elevated system, but the Thai government decided to change it to an underground system to connect with the southern section.
