Abstract:

A new network model is emerging introducing a new step between servers and desktops: middleware servers with querying software. The new network architecture, combined with the use of both intranets and the Internet, will extend engineering data from worksations to any computer with a Web browser. The use of project web pages and of Java allows a wider range of computers to access data that otherwise would be unavailable to many members of project teams, thereby increasing the flow of information. Using 3-D models in lieu of traditional CAD drawings, enabled by new hardware and software, holds the potential of changing the way engineers work.
