Abstract:

Spenser White and Prentis designed a hybrid soil nailing system to ensure that a historic library on the Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, campus would not be damaged during adjacent construction and excavation. An underground library addition required excavation 22 feet below and adjacent to the foundation of the existing library wing, which has 2-foot thick stone walls. The soil nailing and underpinning hybrid system had to support massive vertical load and the lateral load from the soil. Frequent monitoring during and after construction revealed no settlement of the historic structure greater than � inch, which was within the allowance to prevent damage.
