Abstract:

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, a public utility serving Prince Georges County and Montgomery County, Md., publishes a design guide (DG-04) to help outside consultants meet its standards when designing wastewater pumping stations. In an attempt to reduce agency-wide costs while maximizing the efficiency of its stations, the commission decided to reevaluate and upgrade its design guide. To assure that its changes didn't affect pumping station performance, the commission worked with two outside firms to conduct a thorough study of pumping stations throughout the country. After interviewing the chief engineers and operations and maintenance supervisors at 15 public sanitation agencies in the U.S., the study team learned of three major areas of DG-04 that it felt needed to be updatedas well as a host of minor revisions that it could make. The three changes the commission adopted were to delete the mechanical screening systems, to incorporate guidelines for the use of submersible wet-well pumps and to utilize submersible pumps in dry wells where submersible wet-well pumps couldn't be used.
