Abstract:

Covered wooden bridges are a visual testament to the American spirit. Originally designed with roof-like covers to protect the exposed wood from the effects of sun and rain, these bridges became treasured gathering places in rural America for events from political rallies to weddings. One of the most extensive photographic records covering 138 selected historic covered bridges found in North America, the book offers detailed truss diagrams, basic construction details, and location information for each featured bridge. A complete index of all of the nearly 1,000 surviving covered bridges is included, and a number of bridges are presented in multipage formats.
