Abstract:

This proceedings contains keynote and summary papers presented at the 11th ASCE Engineering Mechanics Conference held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, May 20-22, 1996. The keynote papers address new trends in biomechanics, basic concepts and application of structural control, and recent advances in environmental fluid mechanics. The summary papers include those of three symposia, poroelasticity, computational geomechanics and smart structures, and the rest of the papers cover such diverse topics as: 1) mechanics in life sciences; 2) turbulence; 3) fluid structure interaction; 4) granular flow; 5) stochastic mechanics; 6) system identification; 7) soil-structure interaction; 8) nondestructive evaluation of bridges and infrastructures; 9) retrofitting and health monitoring of structures; 10) damage and failure of composites; 11) reinforced concrete and other engineering materials; 12) modeling of material with discontinuities and heterogeneities; and 13) mechanics of plates shells and beams.
