Abstract:

Design of a grading plan for a landfill expansion in Los Angeles County was complicated by slopes with adverse bedding planes, permitting stipulations and property setbacks. Flattening existing slopes to 4:1 would have cut the permitted fill volume and earthfill needed for landfill operations. Evaluation of slope stabilization alternatives led to combining passive soil anchors and surface bearing blocks. This saved more than $4.2 million compared to other systems. More than 260 soil anchors up to 52 m long with capacities up to 4,450 kN were distributed over the three upper benches by the specialty contractor, who completed the project in 39 working days, three months ahead of schedule, with no change orders.
