Abstract:

Los Angeles is located in a geologically young area of the western United States. It is characterized by highly erodible, steep mountains and flat alluvial plains. Located in a semi-arid region, the undeveloped and developed mountainous areas are subject to a severe fire hazard potential. Los Angeles is also subject to high intensity. storms from the Pacific Ocean. The result is often catastrophic storm flows containing mud and debris inundating various lower floodplains.
