The Fate of Pathogenic Organisms in Mamala Bay

Abstract:

The fate of enteric organisms in Mamala Bay is studied using coupled hydrodynamic and pathogen fate models. The purpose of the study is to determine the contributions of various sources to organism counts throughout Mamala Bay and the benefits achieved by various source control options. The development of the pathogen fate model is presented and its application is discussed. Both shoreline releases and two deep water outfalls are found to have impacts in the bay and at bathing beaches. Of these sources, the outfall from the Sand Island wastewater treatment plant and the Ala Wai Canal are the dominant contributors. The relative importance of the sources is dependent on the indicator organism used to assess fecal contamination.
