Abstract:

The existing Prado Dam, located in the City of Corona, CA, is deficient in providing adequate flood protection to the Santa Ana River floodplain downstream of the dam. To provide adequate flood protection for the 190-year design flood event, the US Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District (LAD), is proposing to raise the existing dam embankment and spillway, and to construct a new outlet works and interior dikes. A 1:50 scale physical model of the Prado Dam spillway was built and tested at the US Army Waterways Experiment Station (WES) located in Vicksburg, MS, to analyze the hydraulic performance of the proposed spillway design. The physical model study included model testing for both fixed and movable bed conditions. WES investigated the stability of the existing spiliway invert and several modifications of the spiliway crest configuration to improve the flow conditions within the chute. This paper summarizes the results of these physical model tests.
