Getting Wet with Metric

Abstract:

Conversion from what is now the American system of units to the SI system of units is a dry subject at best. In the water resources area, however, a rather complete immersion is going to be necessary if any progress is to be made. Hence, those of us who work in this area are truly going to have to get wet with metric. The perspective presented in this paper is from the viewpoint of working with a firm involved in water resources projects both domestic and abroad. The company for which I work is involved with national and international suppliers of equipment for hydropower projects, irrigation projects, water supply projects, and process plants. To date, the problems associated with the supposed conversion to the metric system are mostly amusing; at least we have not yet managed to convert turbine characteristics that result in more than 100% efficiency! (This has already been done elsewhere.)
