Abstract:

Among the technologies available to deal with the problem of pesticides in drinking water, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) represent a treatment that has the potential of completely destroying and converting the pesticides to hanniess substances. In this study two chlorinated pesticides; namely, heptachior and alachlor were effectively oxidized by either molecular ozone or the hydroxyl free radical. Molecular ozone was found more effective in the oxidation of heptachior and its hydrolysis daughter 1-hydroxychiordene. While the hydroxyl radical, generated by accelerated decomposition of ozone by addition of hydrogen peroxide or by raising the pH, was found more effective in the case of alachlor.
