Selection of Sediment Transport Relations: Part II, Ranges of Dimensionless Numbers

Abstract:

With a large number of sediment transport equations claiming to be applicable within various ranges of hydraulic and sediment parameters, engineers are often faced with the dilemma of selecting an equation that will best predict sediment transport for the scenario at hand. To aid in this selection process, a three part paper is presented. For Part II, steps were taken to determine the relationship between four dimensionless sediment parameters and four sediment transport relations. Those parameters are dimensionless grain size, D dimensionless mobility number (also called grain Froude number), F dimensionless flow depth, Z; and dimensionless stream power, P. The four sediment transport relations examined are Ackers and White, Brownlie, Engelund and Hansen, and Yang. The dimensionless parameters are computed for each data set that were used in the development of the transport relations. Effective ranges of these parameters are defined, which then can be used to determine which sediment transport relation to use.
