Use of Reclaimed Water in Cooling Towers

Abstract:

The Mobil Oil Torrance Refinery is a modem fuels refinery in Los Angeles County. Like all crude oil refineries, it requires a reliable supply of water for process cooling, steam generation, and other purposes. The West Basin Municipal Water District (WBMWD) provides water to many city water departments and water companies in the Los Angeles area. Since fresh water is a valuable resource in this area, WBMWD has undertaken a major program to make more fresh water available for drinking water by providing reclaimed and recycled water for large industrial consumers, for reinjection to replenish groundwater, and for other suitable purposes. In July 1995, WBMWD began providing reclaimed water to Mobil for process cooling. Mobil's cooling towers have been operating successfully with reclaimed water since that time.
