Abstract: This paper reviews the design and installation of Concrete Bar-Wrapped Cylinder pipe (C303), a pipe that has served the water industry in the US and Canada for over 50 years. It is a durable pipe, designed as a composite structure combining the tensile strength of steel with the compressive strength and corrosion-inhibiting properties of Portland cement mortar. This pipe is manufactured in accordance with the AWWA Standard C303 and is designed in accordance with AWWA Manual M9. Although the pipe is described as semi-rigid, diameters 610 mm (24 in) and smaller are essentially rigid and require minimal bedding. Larger diameter C-303 depends increasingly on developing supporting strength from the lateral soil pressure.
