Abstract: Discrete-particle computer simulations using up to 15,000 identical spheres reproduce particle-scale information obtained from high-speed motion picture observations of disperse, collision-dominated flows of 6-mm-diameter plastic spheres in a glass-walled chute. All parameters in the simulations are obtained from experimental measurement. Full simulations of the chute geometry show the spatial and temporal evolution of the flows, and ancillary simulations using periodic boundaries demonstrate the sensitivity of the simulations to variations in such parameters as the fluid drag coefficient.
