Abstract: Timber bulkhead design and construction methods are presented in this publication for consideration by the engineering profession. Included are papers on an analytical method for the design of cantilever bulkheads, practical design of an anchored bulkhead, protection of wood from marine borer attack, and experienced construction aspects. Also included are papers on a timber wave barrier and a marine railroad. Timber installations are the most widely used construction method on the waterfront, but their design is probably the least understood because it is often empirical. This Geotechnical Special Publication on Timber Bulkheads was written by experienced engineers and wood technicians. It is believed that contributions from experienced practitioners will show the range of modern practice and delineate the applications appropriate for timber waterfront construction.
