Abstract: An overview of cold region construction and state of the practice reviews of various aspects of this engineering specialty are presented. The overview covres the development of cold region construction with a description of the variety of conditions found in the state of Alaska as examples of the types of cold regions encountered. Unique problems associated with cold region construction are reviewed. State of the practice reviews include preparation of equipment for cold regions, utilization of ice and snow during construction, earthwork, pile construction practices, concreting, quality assurance, and safety.
