Abstract: The condition of the bridges in service is greatly affected by the volume and distribution of traffic load. In this paper, the traffic investigation has been used as a main factor to evaluate the deterioration of bridges due to the fatigue damage under the moving traffic load. Firstly, the fatigue properties of the reinforced concrete are studied. By using a three dimensional FEM model of a bridge, a transient dynamic analysis is performed and the stress history of the fatigue hot spots is obtained. Secondly, the limit cycles under all levels of the stress amplitude have been counted through rain-flow algorithm. Finally, the cumulative damage can be evaluated according to Miner linear cumulative damage criterion and limit cycles. Therefore, the deteriorating rate of the bridge due to traffic load is also available. This is very important to maintain the decision-making for the road management department, especially on the road with heavy traffic.
