Abstract: The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) constructed an underground, 43 million gallon (MG) retention facility to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSO) to Flushing Creek and Flushing Bay from the Kissena Corridor portion of the Tallman Island Wastewater Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) service area. To represent and evaluate the performance of this facility, the existing Tallman Island sewer system model was updated to account for the storage provided by the retention facility through the operation of its influent sluice gates, screening channels and dewatering pumps. The model was calibrated using hydraulic data monitored at various locations around the facility. The calibrated model is now being used as a tool to develop information for permit-reporting requirements to New York State for post-construction monitoring of the facility's performance and as a tool in an ongoing study to assess alternatives to maximize conveyance of wet-weather flow for treatment at the Tallman Island WPCP. This paper summarizes the model refinement around the facility, calibration and application to meet the above goals.
