Abstract: Constructing a more than 1,000 m long bridge across a deep canyon with rocky terrain and limited access would present challenges to engineering and construction professionals anywhere. But for the team designing and building a new crossing in central China, whirling winds and deep caves beneath the tower foundations added complications that even the most experienced engineers may never have encountered. Their solutions included a complex pulley system to lift the deck sections, an innovative cable anchoring system — and a rocket launcher.
