Abstract: Arising from the tragic collapse of a West Virginia bridge 50 years ago this month, the National Bridge Inspection Program has helped keep bridges in the United States safe for motorists for decades. The standards and procedures for bridge inspections have changed dramatically over the years, and technology is fueling even greater transformations. But experts say it will be some time before robots and drones take the place of highly trained, experienced inspectors.
