Abstract: For decades, New Yorkers were promised a new subway line along Manhattan’s Second Avenue, a replacement for the elevated line that was removed from the thoroughfare in the 1940s. As the first of four planned phases for the Second Avenue Subway, the newly opened 1.8 mi long line begins to fulfill this promise, improving transit options on Manhattan’s east side and relieving crowding on the city’s busiest subway line.
